Zakat Calculator for Gold, Silver, Cash and Business Assets

Our zakat calculator works out the zakat due on your cash, gold, silver, savings and business stock. Enter what you own and what you owe, pick a nisab and see the amount at 2.5%. It helps you calculate zakat in any currency for one lunar year.

What Zakat Is and Who Must Pay

Zakat is a yearly payment of 2.5% on the wealth of a Muslim who owns more than a minimum amount. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. The money goes to people in need and to the other groups the Quran names. Most families calculate zakat once a year, often during Ramadan.

You owe zakat when three things are true. Your net wealth reaches the nisab, you have held it for one full lunar year and the wealth is yours to use freely. If any one of these is missing, nothing is due yet. A zakat calculator saves you from adding every item by hand.

How to Use the Zakat Calculator

The form follows the order of a normal zakat worksheet. Fill in only the lines that apply to you.

  • Choose your currency and whether you weigh metals in grams or tola.
  • Type today's gold and silver price per unit, then the weight of gold and silver you own.
  • Add cash, savings, business stock, money owed to you and any other zakatable assets.
  • Enter debts due now and any zakat you already paid or had deducted this year.
  • Pick the nisab basis and click Calculate.

The zakat calculator then shows your net wealth, the nisab, the 2.5% amount and the balance left to pay. A short note lists every line of the math, so you can check it against your own records. The example numbers in the boxes are only a starting point, so replace them with your own figures and today's local rates.

How to Calculate Zakat Step by Step

To calculate zakat by hand, follow the same steps the tool uses. First add up everything that is zakatable. Then subtract the debts that are due now. The result is your net wealth.

Compare the net wealth with the nisab. When it is equal or higher and a lunar year has passed, multiply the whole net wealth by 0.025. Zakat is taken from the whole amount. It is not limited to the part above the nisab.

A Worked Example

To calculate zakat for one household in Pakistan, start with Rs 500,000 in cash and bank accounts and 3 tola of gold priced at Rs 420,000 per tola. The gold is worth Rs 1,260,000. Business stock adds Rs 300,000 and the debts due now are Rs 160,000. These prices are only for the example.

The assets total Rs 2,060,000 and the net wealth is Rs 1,900,000. With silver at Rs 6,900 per tola, the silver nisab of 52.5 tola is Rs 362,250. The wealth is above it, so the zakat due is 2.5% of Rs 1,900,000, which is Rs 47,500. Enter the same numbers in the zakat calculator to see each line match.

Nisab: The Minimum Before Zakat Applies

The nisab is the least amount of wealth on which zakat becomes due. It is set by weight, not by a fixed sum of money. That is why the nisab value changes whenever the price of gold or silver moves. Check it before you calculate zakat.

Two measures are in use. The silver nisab is 612.36 grams, which is 52.5 tola. The gold nisab is 87.48 grams, which is 7.5 tola.

MeasureGramsTola
Silver nisab612.3652.5
Gold nisab87.487.5
One tola11.6641

Hanafi scholars generally use the silver measure, which is the lower threshold, so more households qualify. Some scholars prefer the gold measure. The calculator lets you pick either one or type your own nisab value, such as a figure announced by a local authority. Ask a qualified scholar if you are unsure which to follow.

Gold and Silver in Zakat

Zakat on gold applies to coins, bars and jewelry once the weight passes the nisab. Hanafi scholars also count jewelry worn in regular use. Scholars of some other schools do not, so follow the opinion you rely on. Enter the pure weight if you can, since a 22 karat ring holds less gold than its full weight.

Zakat on silver works the same way. Silver coins, bars and ornaments count at today's market price per gram or tola. If you hold both metals, add their values together before you calculate zakat against the nisab you chose.

Use the sale price in your local market, not the price you paid. Jewelers often quote a lower buyback rate, so check one or two quotes. The zakat calculator multiplies each weight by the price you type, so it is only as exact as that price.

Savings, Cash and Business Assets

Zakat on savings covers cash at home, balances in bank accounts, term deposits and similar holdings. It also covers shares and funds you hold to sell, at their market value on the day you pay. Count only what you can reach, not money locked in a plan you cannot access.

Business owners who calculate zakat add the resale value of their stock and the cash in the business account. Equipment, shop fittings and the building you work from are not counted. Money that customers owe you counts when you expect to receive it.

Debts due now come off the total. For a long loan, many scholars deduct only the installments that fall due within the year. A home you live in and a car you use daily are not zakatable assets. Take these debts off before you calculate zakat on the rest.

Lunar Year and Zakat Date

Zakat is tied to the Islamic lunar year, which is about 354 days. That is roughly 11 days shorter than the calendar year, so your zakat date moves earlier every year. Many people simply pick one fixed day, such as the first of Ramadan, and work out everything on that day.

The count starts on the day your wealth first reaches the nisab. If it falls below the nisab during the year, the count starts again.

Zakat in Pakistan

Many Pakistani families work in tola and rupees. The zakat calculator accepts tola and PKR. Set the metal unit to tola and the currency to PKR, then type the local rates from your jeweler or the sarafa market. Rates change daily, so enter fresh numbers each time.

Banks in Pakistan deduct zakat from many savings accounts on the first day of Ramadan, unless the holder has filed a declaration under the zakat rules. The government announces its own nisab for this deduction every year, and it can differ from the figure you use personally. If the bank took zakat, enter that amount in the "Zakat already paid" box and the tool shows the balance.

Who Can Receive Zakat

The Quran names eight groups of recipients. They include the poor, the needy, those in debt and travelers in need. Pay a person or an organization you trust, and keep a record of the amount and the date.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the price you paid for gold instead of today's sale price.
  • Counting your home or your daily car as zakatable wealth.
  • Forgetting money owed to you or debts that are due now.
  • Mixing up the lunar year with the calendar year.
  • Treating the result as a ruling instead of a worked estimate.

Keep a note of the date your wealth first passed the nisab. That date is your zakat anniversary. A zakat calculator is easiest to use when you check it on the same day each year.
