Time Calculator and Hours Calculator

Our time calculator works out the hours between two times, adds up a weekly time card and adds or subtracts any amount of time. Use it as an hours calculator for work shifts, with breaks, overnight shifts, decimal hours and overtime pay. Pick a mode and enter your times to start.

What the Time Calculator Does

Adding up hours and minutes is harder than normal math, because an hour has 60 minutes instead of 100. That is why 7:45 plus 1:30 is not 8:75 but 9:15. A time calculator handles that carrying for you and turns clock times into clear totals.

This tool has four modes. It finds the time between a start and an end, totals a full week of shifts, adds or subtracts lists of durations and moves a clock time forward or back. Each result also shows decimal hours, which is what most payroll systems use.

How to Use the Hours Calculator

  • Choose a mode from the menu at the top.
  • Enter your start and end times, or the durations you want to add.
  • Add breaks, an hourly rate and an overtime limit if they apply.
  • Read the total in hours and minutes, decimal hours and pay.

The tool updates as you type, so you can try different shifts in seconds. Times use your device's own clock format. Shifts that run past midnight are handled without any extra step.

Hours Between Two Times

To find the time between two clock times, subtract the start from the end. A shift from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours and 30 minutes. Take away a 30 minute unpaid lunch and the hours calculator gives exactly 8 hours, or 8.00 in decimal.

If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift crossed midnight. A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours long. With a 30 minute break, the time worked is 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.50 hours.

Converting Minutes to Decimal Hours

Payroll and invoices usually show hours as decimals, not as hours and minutes. To convert, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. So 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7 + 45 รท 60 = 7.75 hours.

MinutesDecimal hours
50.08
100.17
150.25
200.33
300.50
400.67
450.75
500.83

A common mistake is to write 7 hours 45 minutes as 7.45 hours. That loses 18 minutes of pay, since 0.45 hours is only 27 minutes. The time calculator always shows both formats side by side.

Weekly Time Card With Overtime

The time card mode works like a time card calculator for a full week. Enter the in and out times and the break for each day, and leave days off blank. The tool adds every shift and splits the total into regular and overtime hours.

A Worked Example

Someone works Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM with a 30 minute break. Each day is 8 hours 15 minutes, so the week totals 41.25 hours. At $20 an hour with overtime after 40 hours at 1.5 times pay, regular pay is $800.00 and overtime pay is $37.50.

That makes total pay of $837.50 for the week. Change any day and the hours calculator updates every figure. It is a quick way to check a paycheck before you sign off on a time sheet.

Overtime Rules

In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime of at least 1.5 times the regular rate for most hourly workers after 40 hours in a week. Some states add daily overtime, such as California after 8 hours in a day. Salaried staff may be exempt, depending on their duties and pay.

Set the overtime limit and multiplier to match your own rules. For daily overtime, check each day separately in the first mode. Our Salary Calculator turns an hourly rate into weekly, monthly and yearly pay.

Adding and Subtracting Time

The add mode works as a time duration calculator for lists of times. Enter each duration in hours, minutes and seconds, and choose plus or minus for each row. The hours calculator carries extra minutes into hours, just like adding by hand.

For example, 2 hours 45 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes minus 20 minutes is 3 hours 55 minutes. In decimal, that is 3.9167 hours. Use this mode to total video clips, study sessions, workouts or billable tasks.

Adding Time to a Clock

The last mode moves a clock time forward or back by any amount. Start at 10:15 PM and add 9 hours 50 minutes, and the time calculator shows 8:05 AM the next day. It is handy for flight arrival times, medicine schedules and cooking timers.

Hours Worked for Payroll

Employers in the US must keep accurate records of time worked for hourly staff. Many use time clocks, apps or paper time sheets. Rounding is allowed in some cases, but it must not cheat workers over time.

A common rule rounds to the nearest 15 minutes, so 7 minutes rounds down and 8 minutes rounds up. Keep your own record of each shift in a notebook or phone. If your paycheck looks short, compare it with the hours calculator before you raise it with your employer.

Paid and Unpaid Breaks

Short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are usually paid in the US. Meal breaks of 30 minutes or more can be unpaid if you are fully relieved from work. Enter only unpaid breaks in the break box, so the total matches what you should be paid for.

Hours Calculator for Freelancers and Billing

Freelancers, consultants and lawyers often bill by the hour, so accurate totals turn straight into income. Track each task with a start and an end time, then add them with the hours calculator each evening. Round only once, on the final total, so small errors do not build up across many tasks.

Many professionals bill in 6 or 15 minute steps. A task of 1 hour 20 minutes is 1.33 hours, but billed in 15 minute steps it becomes 1.5 hours. Check your contract, since some clients only pay for the exact time.

Multiply the decimal hours by your rate to get the amount due. At $45 an hour, 1 hour 20 minutes comes to $60.00. The hours calculator shows decimal hours with two places, which suits most invoices.

Time Calculator for Study, Sport and Travel

Students can total study sessions across a week to see if they are on track. Runners and swimmers add lap or split times with the time duration calculator mode. The total is shown in hours, minutes and seconds as well as in decimal form.

For travel, the clock mode answers questions such as when a 9 hour 50 minute flight will land. It does not change time zones. Add or subtract the time zone gap yourself after you get the result from the time calculator.

Cooks can use the same mode to plan a meal. Work back from the time you want to eat and subtract each step in turn. The time calculator shows the start time for every stage.

12 Hour and 24 Hour Clocks

Some countries and jobs use a 12 hour clock with AM and PM, while others use a 24 hour clock. The 24 hour format is often called military time in the US. It avoids mix ups between morning and evening, which matters in hospitals, transport and the armed forces.

12 hour clock24 hour clock
12:00 AM (midnight)00:00
6:30 AM06:30
12:00 PM (noon)12:00
1:00 PM13:00
6:45 PM18:45
11:59 PM23:59

To convert a PM time to the 24 hour clock, add 12 to the hour, except for 12 PM. For AM times, only the midnight hour changes, becoming 00. The time calculator shows its clock results in both formats, so you never have to convert in your head.

Tips for Tracking Your Time

  • Write down start and end times as you go, not at the end of the week.
  • Record breaks separately, since paid and unpaid breaks are treated differently.
  • Use decimal hours on invoices and time sheets.
  • Check overnight shifts carefully, since they belong to the day they started.

Small errors add up across a year. Ten minutes a day lost on a time sheet is more than 40 hours of pay a year for a full time worker. A time card calculator makes it easy to catch those gaps early.
