Grade Calculator: Score Out of Any Total, Final Grade and Weighted Grade
Our grade calculator turns a score such as 16 out of 20 into a percentage, a letter grade and GPA points. Two more modes find the final exam score you need and the weighted grade of a course.
How to Use the Grade Calculator
Choose what you want to find. The first mode turns a score into a percentage. Type your points and the total, or tap a button such as out of 20 or out of 100.
The second mode asks for your current grade, the weight of the exam and the grade you want. The third mode adds up parts of a course, such as homework and tests, using their weights. Pick plus and minus or letters only for the scale. Every mode of the grading calculator updates as you type.
What Grade Is 16/20?
What grade is 16/20? That is 80%. On a plus and minus scale it is a B−, and on a letters only scale it is a B. This grading calculator shows both when you switch the scale.

Schools in France and Belgium grade out of 20. Many teachers elsewhere use out of 10 or out of 25. The same score on another total appears in the results box.
How Percentages Become Letters
Most US schools use 90 for an A, 80 for a B, 70 for a C and 60 for a D. The plus and minus scale splits each band into thirds. A 93 and above is an A, and a 90 to 92 is an A−.
Your syllabus has the final say, because some teachers curve scores or use another cut off. The grading calculator follows the common US bands.
Finding the Final Exam Score You Need
Say your current grade is 82% and the final counts for 30% of the course. You want an 85% overall. The formula is (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30, which gives 92%.
Those values are already filled in on the second mode of the grade calculator. The tool also lists the score needed to finish at 90, 80, 70 or 60 percent. If the answer is above 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit.
Weighted Course Grades
A weighted course gives each part its own share. Homework at 92% with a 20% weight adds 18.4 points. Quizzes at 85% with 20% add 17, a midterm at 78% with 25% adds 19.5 and a project at 88% with 15% adds 13.2.
These weights add up to 80%, so the result of 85.13% is the grade on the part of the course finished so far. The tool says so under the results. Enter the remaining 20% later to see the full grade.
Common Grading Mistakes
- Dividing by the wrong total, such as 100 when the test was out of 20.
- Reading a weight of 30% as 0.3 points instead of 30% of the course.
- Averaging category scores without their weights.
Check the total and the weights first. A grading calculator only gives a correct answer for the numbers you type.
